Rating: 210 degrees (Out of 360)
Ugg. This is one of those movies with a great premise, very good actiing, pacing and effective music ... but ...
Before I get to the 'but', I really liked this movie. I really felt for Amy Adam's charactor, she was smart and really lead this one with a strong performance. I have been following her carreer and have seen several of her movies simply because she's there. Jeremy Renner's charm worked well. The concept of communication with the aliens was performed well and I really like the development of this and how they worked as a collaboration with the rest of the world.
Now the 'but' ... (however, avoiding spoilers will make this vague, but so be it)
The hook, the entire reason the climax gets resolved is flawed. In fact, its so lame (dumb really) I would have easily given this movie a 320 rating, but I can't get over the lameness of the hook and the subsequent flaws in Amy's ability to exploit this hook.
Most of it is good and worth your time, but for the sci-fi geek in me, I have to penalize this move harshly.
